If you're buying Balluff inductive sensors, a Balluff magnetic sensor, a portable CMM, a flow meter, and a Keysight oscilloscope in the same budget cycle, stop comparing prices first. The purchase order that looks cheapest almost always costs more by the end of the year. I'm a procurement manager at a 200-person industrial automation company, and I've managed a $180,000 annual measurement-and-sensor budget for six years, documented every order in our cost tracking system. I almost approved the $1,100 unit until I calculated total cost. What surprised me most wasn't the price gap. It was how often flow meter price is used as a proxy for quality without checking repeatability, pressure drop, or spares availability. A flow meter with a lower initial price but higher permanent pressure drop can cost more in pump energy over its life. Total cost isn't difficult to calculate; you just have to ask the right questions. For flow meters, the right questions are: Who calibrates it locally? What is the turndown ratio? What is the stated repeatability? What happens when a spare board fails?

When the Specialist Answer Is More Credible Than the One-Stop Answer
There's a procurement principle I've come to trust: if a vendor says “that's outside our expertise, and you should call someone else,” I'm more likely to give them the next order. Balluff does sensors and IO-Link well. They don't make a portable CMM or a multimeter. Keysight makes scopes and precision instruments but doesn't position itself as a source for Balluff's product line. The companies that do everything are usually not the best at any one thing.
That's not an excuse for you to juggle 14 vendors. It's a reason to use a small group of specialists and let each one know what the others do. In practice, our sensor supplier knows which oscilloscope we use, and our test equipment supplier knows which sensors are in our line. That reduces surprises without making everyone a one-stop generalist. The vendor who admits a product isn't their strength earns my trust for the products that are.
Boundary Conditions: When the Above Doesn't Apply
If you're buying for a one-off project with no maintenance team, the calculus changes. Rent a portable CMM, buy the cheaper flow meter if you only need it for a worst-case reading, and don't standardize your entire plant on Balluff sensors if you already have a different ecosystem that works.
The other edge case: if you already have a huge installed base of non-IO-Link sensors, don't rip them out just to chase a single brand. IO-Link is worth adopting on new lines, but retrofitting it everywhere is rarely cost-effective.
