3. What should I check before buying an inductive proximity sensor?
Most engineers I talk to start with sensing distance and price. I made that mistake in my first year and learned the hard way when the sensor kept triggering on adjacent metal. The specs that matter more: shielded versus unshielded (flush versus non-flush mounting), normally open versus normally closed, switching frequency, and output type—PNP, NPN, or IO-Link for diagnostic data.
Also check the target material. A steel target gives you a longer sensing distance than aluminum, and datasheet numbers usually assume standard steel.
