Insulation Tester vs. Megger: Yes and No
The short answer: a Megger is a brand of insulation tester, not a different type of tool. “Megger” became the generic term for any insulation resistance tester, like “Kleenex” for tissues. So when someone says “megger it,” they mean test insulation resistance with a high-voltage insulation tester.
Most insulation testers apply 250V, 500V, or 1000V DC and read the resistance in megohms. If your team works on 480V motors, buy a 1000V-capable unit. If they only test control wiring, 500V may be enough.
